God gave you a beach.

Today I went for a walk along the beach with my Gran. Lovely in itself – I don’t get to see her all that much. The sun was warm on my neck,  the wind pushed against me gently and there was sand in between my toes. It was a beautiful day. Towards the end of the walk, I had noticed that I have  for the entirety of our walk, only looked at the ground, and to the side in conversation.  It was a…

Frodo’s relationship with the ring of power is a perfect example of our relationship with our sin, the longer we carry our sin, the more hold it has over our lives and the more we dread giving it up. Our sin becomes precious. But God desires us to give up our sin, to cast it into the fires of Mount Doom, if you will. The quicker we cast it off ourselves, the easier it is to do of our own accord, the longer we hold on to it, the more it will cost; a finger for Frodo, a soul for Gollum, but in the end, the our sin, like the ring, will burn.

“When orders are issued in other spheres of life there is no doubt whatever of their meaning. If a father sends his child to bed, the boy knows at once what he has to do. But suppose he has picked up a smattering of pseudo-theology. In that case he would argue more or less like this: “Father tells me to go to bed, but he really means that I am tired, and he does not want me to be tired. I can overcome my tiredness just as well if I go out and play. Therefore though father tells me to go to ed he really means: ‘Go out and play.’ ” If a child tried such arguments on his father or a citizen on his government, they would both meet with a kind of language they could not fail to understand - in short they would be punished. Are we to treat the commandments of Jesus differently from other orders and exchange single-minded obedience for downright disobedience?”
